Cheaper seed brands
« on: January 25, 2012, 12:49 »
Are b&q or similar seeds alright? We are first time veg growers this year now we have room. The main brand seed company websites are going to cost quite a lot of money to get in what we have planned out for our plots.
Two wrongs don't make a right but three lefts do.

Check out Alan Roman's website, not a huge selection but very good prices. DT Brown is a little more expensive but still better value than a lot of the others, with free P&P. Also take a look at ebay. I use a supplier on there called Premier Seeds, who has a very good range at bargain prices, and I've had no problem at all with their seeds.

Also shops such as Aldi and Lidl produce seeds, which have been perfectly succesful for people on here. :)

I have used and still use cheap seeds from B&Q, Aldi, Lidl and many of the pound shops with great success.  My personal experience is that the cheaper ones often grow better than the branded but maybe I was just unlucky with them.

I also get a lot of my seeds from magazines, the main one being Amateur Gardening (weekly).

Simply seeds on the internet are good as they do cheaper varieties and have a good choice. They come in natty green zip lock bags too!

Keep an eye open for shops which do special offers on big name brands. I know where to pick up Mr Fothergills at 2 packets for £1.

Why not appeal on freecycle and see what you get? Remember that seeds often last longer than you are told on the packet (useful advice here. I used some six year old kohl rabi last year and got a good crop out of the remains of the packet.

If you can join a gardeners association (like the one that runs our allotments but lets non allotment holders join for a very small membership fee), you may find that they have good brands at reduced prices.

I've been buying 'cheap' seeds for donkey's years and never had any problems.

Although the lavish colour catalogues of the big suppliers are very nice to look at don't forget it's the customer who buys their seeds who's paying for all that paper!

Don't forget that there are regulations out there to ensure viability and provenance of packaged sold seeds, so even if they're cheap, they ought to be ok (at least in theory!)

This seems excpetional value, with 25 packets for just under £20  :D

If they are the veg you'd want to grow of course  ;)

I bought a couple of packs of B&Q Value mixed salad leaf seed last year, and the germination was awful compared with the others that I have tried.  I have found their own brand stuff fine though, I sowed a pack of their onion seeds a week ago and they're all coming up nicely already.
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.
