Question regarding growing from seed
« on: January 24, 2012, 17:18 »
This is going to make me sound really thick but here goes! ....
If I buy a pack of seeds with 25 seeds etc, will that mean 1 seed - 1 broccoli floret? I just planted a load of seeds last year when I wasnt sure! Should I put 1 seed then space then 1 more seed etc? Sorry for sounding like such a numpty!!

It usually means 1 plant per seed.

So, for broccoli, you'll get quite a lot of florets on a single plant (if you're lucky that is!!).  For peas, one seed is one plant from which you get a lot of pea pods.  Ditto beans, courgettes and so on.

Occasionally there are exceptions - beetroot is one, where what you sow can actually be a cluster of seeds.  But it's usually clear on the packet which ones these are.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh right ok that makes sense, thank you for explaning!
With Runner Beans for example, would you just plant one seed, space, one seed space?

I think you could do with reading up a bit first.

Have a look at the articles here:

http://www.allotment-garden.org/growing_information.php

and get a good book, (some recommended on that page).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes.  The spacing will be set out clearly on the packet and, as DD says, there's a lot of useful information on the main website and in various gardening books.

You dont sound thick at all, you are just learning.  Everyone has to start somewhere, I am always being told different things, so you have come to the right place.   I am a newbie too, I sometimes go on videojug which have some great videos on growing seeds.  Searching your subject on google and selecting videos is also good.  Im sure it will get easier when this rotten weather shifts and you can get talking to other people on the allotment.

I have 3 books on allotments but still find things I need answering !!

Not thick at all. There could be quite some confusion on this one.

Broccoli in shops, etc.; calabrese in catalogues - one floret per plants, like cauli head.

Broccoli as sprouting - several smaller florets a plant.
