Seeds
« on: January 22, 2012, 21:11 »
Hey everyone

I am new to sowing seeds and growing vegetables, a couple of weeks ago I was in the poundshop and there were grow your own propagator trays in the garden section.  So I thought for a pound each I'd nothing to lose to give a go on the window sill.  So I bought the tomatoes (gardeners delight), peppers and gem lettuce.  I thought no chance would they work but took me so took me by surprise this morning  when my tomato seeds have germinated and these cute little shoots appeared overnight this morning!!

On the instructions it says when the seeds have germinated remove the lid and allow to establish then transferr to 8cm pots and allow to continue then move again into 13cm pots.

In the small print it says recommends using the eazifeed fertiliser range.  Never heard of it.

My question is do I now need to give them a fertiliser now?

I bought a Tomato plant food Concentrate not realising you have to make 1/2 capful with a gallon of water, (I have just been spraying the little trays with room temperature water.

Other foods I have in my shed are:

Miracle grow pour and feed
Miracle grow plant revive
Miracle grow slow release all purpose plant food.

Are the above considered fertilisers, so many available on the market that make fantastic claims just wondered about when sowing seeds what is important nutrition wise for the seeds.

Many thanks
Amanda

Tomato seedlings do not need any extra feed at this time.

I only start feeding my plants, (generic "Tomorite") after the first fruit ha wet.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Gobs makes a valid point. Where do you intend these plants to go ultimately?

Amanda. lettuce seed  donot  need heat to germinate, in fact when it is too warm they won't grow at all.

A tiny pinch of about six seeds in a pot is all that is needed, then transfer them (pricking out this is called) into a larger container - a window box inddors is ideal) about six inxhes apart, staggered over the surface and they will be fine.

No feeding needed really

Hi there

Thanks for your advice.  I intend for the tomatoes to ultimately grow in the greenhouse.

I planted them all 2 weeks ago now, strong little shoots from the tomato ones, peppers have same instructions as the tomato so in exactly same place, same time, everything but no signs of any shoots at .  the lettuce which is on a cool windowsill have not come through either.

But happy with the tomato ones.  Would you just cut your losses with the other two.

Cheers
amanda

chillis usually like warmer temperatures, than tomatoes, and some of them can take weeks to germinate.

thats good to know, thanks.  They are not chillies, they are normal peppers but I expect the same climate needed.  I was just following the packet instructions to start sowing in January.  you never know they may pull through!
