Onions and leeks sown, no greenhouse yet so kitchen table has been hijacked. Dad has got a greenhouse and I've given him the rest of the seeds to sow at appropriate times (he lives quite away from me so can't just pop over to do it!) He phoned me yesterday to say 'I've been thinking, would you like me to buy you a greenhouse for the allotment' Yeeeeeessss!!!

Won't sowing leeks from seed in an unheated greenhouse be too cold for the seed to germinate ?

I got going last weekend - peppers, Aubergines, chillis, leeks, onions and dare I say it two windowsill tomatoes (though judging from another thread, yes I do!). As I was sowing them it was hailing outside but I just kept thinking that the very fact that sowing time has finally begun means that spring must be on its way...surely? Last year I lost track of time (putting up a new greenhouse and building a new chicken run) and waited until March/April and unfortunately the promised 'they'll soon catch up' didn't work for me with the Aubergines and peppers (it did with the chillis! :) ) and I only got a grand total of two green peppers and two Aubergines! This year I'm determined to be more on top of things.

A couple of Aubergines have already popped up! This weekend I really need to get onto my sweetpeas and a couple of cabbages, possibly some winter lettuce. :)

Been looking at the onion sets this morning, thinking 'should I??'.

No, as soon as this cold snap passes (how long is it supposed to last?), then I'll
think about making a real start.

Not sown anything yet, but I got 3 bags of compost the other day (has it gone up in price?) and I've just built myself a mini greenhouse in my small greenhouse.  Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, but I want to try to get some chillies and peppers started off a bit earlier than I usually do.  And tomatoes, and spring onions!

I've got serious misgivings about starting seeds too soon but found the enthusiasm for an early start was infectious and now have Blue Green and Musselburgh leeks showing through the compost in my propagator

You are right Richy - time enough to sow in a few weeks  :D

I'm not sowing in this weather!

Well maybe some more toms which will be indoors, certainly nothing in the greenhouse which I can only just keep above zero at night.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was going to sow broad beans and peas in my cold greenhouse protected with bubble wrap but I think it's too cold. All that will happen is the beans and peas will rot on the compost.
