Yes, started mid month with some and others this past week, more next week and each week after in small numbers as my space is limited (greenhouse and raised beds).

Heated propagators: tomatos (several types), onions, lettuce, brussels sprouts, melon, cucumber.

Early peas under newspaper, indoors.

Having a go (1st time) at grafting tomatos this year (for unheated greenhouse), other veg are destined for raised beds.

Enjoy your results...

Lettuce and brussels sprouts do not like heat. In fact they positively hate it.

I see a lot of seed being sown very early on this thread. Have you considered what you're going to with them until conditions are suitable for them to go to their final resting place?

Cucumber for instance I would not consider for a couple of months, and I've got a greenhouse I can heat.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh  DD  you are such a spoil-sport,  what's wrong with having a early mini cucumber?  Just a tiny little one!
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

It's fine to have a go but cucumbers are hard to grow in good conditions!
If they are started this early they will just not grow when planted into their final position and die.

Done it myself many many times and now don't start them until end of March early April as they just get checked and come to nothing, if there is one plant not to get going too early, the cucumber is it  ;)

Thank you, Stompy!

See, I don't just make this up, I've been on these forums for quite a few years and I don't really want to see a lot more tears!

Oh all right then.  I'll just put the pot over in the corner of the greenhouse.

I've only got 'cold' stuff so far:

Broad beans in pots (saves feeding the mice at the plot)
Onions in slightly heated greenhouse up now from seed (autumn sets, shallots and garlic planted end of last year)

Fast growing salad leaves up

Will plant chard in cells today, and early cropping leeks in a tray too.

The reason I have the cold stuff going first is so that I can move it to the plot in the very cold mini tunnel to keep it all out of the (potential ) bad weather but stll sheltered, and then  create some space at home for the chillis, peppers, toms etc as they have to go out in the greenhouse (which I shall then increase the heat in)

I shall wait until we are back from holiday (mid Feb) to sow chills and tomatoes that will grow in the greenhouse and a bit later for those that I will attempt outside.

Déjà vu ...

We have this problem every year on here - keen new gardeners wanting to get things off to a cracking early start.  They usually only try it once.  There are the hardened veterans who keep trying it and keep failing too.

If you read what is on the seed packet and follow it - with a bit of leeway, earlier in the south; later in the north - you will become a successful gardener instead of a disillusioned ex-gardener.  Then you can try doing things differently and join those hardened veterans I mentioned ;)  :)

I think this year has been the hardest yet to keep from thinking I wonder if I should pop some seeds in,because it has been so warm the brain thinks spring is here :tongue2:.But much better to just get prepared and potter about and give it at least another month or two.
I remember someone on here last year had 6' runner beans in there bedroom in February

Just had a look at our 16 day weather forecast.

From next Monday, for at least the next 9 days, it's not forecast during the day to rise above 3oC, with it obviously freezing overnight.

http://www.theweatheroutlook.com

I do appreciate that these long range forecasts are not ultra-reliable, but beware!

I'd be relieved to get some good decent cold weather tbh and get everything back on kilter again
