At one time I used to snuggle down to a raunchy book or would spend time with the OH but now its Dr H all the way!!   (that is, after I've managed to tear myself away from the pooter on this forum!)

Dr H's Veg book is my favourite, even though mine is a little old and hasn't got much on herbs, but its the one I reach for more than any (other than John Seymour!!!!!)  lol

The John Seymore book is fantastic too!  It makes me think that I could actually build a compost loo or butcher my own pig!

I keep trying to get OH to build me one of the furnace/cookers/smoker/heating systems like the one in the book, then we wouldn't have to cut the firewood so small!!!!! lol

And I'm waiting for my wind turbine and my solar panels and my food dryer and.......    and........    lol

But you're right Suzi, JS does make you feel like you can do anything!

It's a good book, but he's a bit too keen on chemicals for my liking.  When I got my lottie I got given 3 books by friends and family!  My favourite is Andi Clevely's - The Allotment Book.

But I still prefer asking people on my site for advice, I'm really lucky in that the 70 year old on the next plot to me used to have my one, so he can tell me what's what and what will grow etc., he's invaluable.

Bought this recently. I do read it in bed, lol

It does make me want to get me a little farm - definitely! That's what the good life is all about. Growing and rearing your own, and looking after them all so lovingly with pride, with children that know exactly where theit food comes from (not the supers!). Forget partying every weekend - even though I'm still recovering from an all night partying experience which saw me stumbling home at 6am this morning!

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

6AM!!  No point in going to bed, may as well see to the chooks!!

Wouldn't it be great if loads of people read the JS book and Dr H's and decided to form a farming cooperative.  I'd join!

Hi, I just thought I would let everyone know that ASDA are selling Dr D G Hessayon’s The Vegetable & Herb Expert book for £4 instead of £7.99. I picked up one today in the Blackpool store.
I hope this is the correct forum

These books were great in their time, but have been superceded by a small handbook that sells for just £2.99 in most of the bigger garden centres.

Dr Hessayons books are still great but they still advise you to use banned chemicals. 8)
The books on the shelves are older stock and the advice is out of dare when it comes to seed names etc. :?

You would be better off looking for the most up to date ones otherwise you may end up looking for treatments that no longer exist.

The general advice given is still great.

I,m glad I was born here in Cornwall, where pasties are out of this world, where the rich saffron cake that the Cornish girls make keeps the hairs on your chest tightly curled.
