peas.(are they worth it?)
« on: January 16, 2012, 14:01 »
hi all.i have never had a go at growing peas before.it seem so much easier to pick up abag of peas from the supermarket £1.50 or so for a kilo.i mean you have to grow quite a lot to get this sort of return.are fresh peas so much nicer than frozen ones to warrant all the hassle? :)

(sings) Peas HUH! What are they good for? Absolutely nothing (say it again....)

While I think frozen peas are very good, fresh peas are something else - even if you only grow enough to have a handful raw every time you're on the plot...

Cue DD?

OOOH, hope you've not unleashed the pea monster

They are far far better when home grown, flavour, texture, variety (etc) and you can be feasting on them all through the year not just when it's the comercial picking season!

And they are very easy to grow.

Can you hear him? he's comming! you shouldn't blasphem (spelling) about peas on this site!

Peas mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, not many make it home.

If you have room then grow some, but, if you are very short of space - I'd agree with other crops being better value, much as I hate to admit that  :nowink:

Wow, this post has been running for 25 mins and no sign of the Pea God?

There are tall climbing varieties of peas if you want to get more crop for a smaller space.
Yes, they are absolutely worth it, imo, and would be in the upper echelon of "Veg that you haven't experienced the full flavour of until you grow your own" club... :-D

I love home grown peas but never cook any - they are far too tasty to eat freshly picked raw  :D

Being very limited on space I always say I'll not bother this year....

But as soon as there is a small gap................................ :D

Yep, I'm with everyone else on this one. There is nothing like homegrown peas. I've grown them in the back garden for the last couple of years but will make space for them on my plot this year. Mine don't make it to the table either.  :)

Sorry, I've been buying my seed spuds.

I felt a disturbance in The Force.

Did someone mention are peas worth growing?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Not able to walk past a row of peas without stopping for a snack. Mine hardly ever reach the house either and if they do they're  eaten raw in a salad yum yum.

Do not forget there are also mange tout and sugar snap varieties that are eaten pods and all.

Earlier as they are picked before the peas bulk up.

Bigger yield per yard.

No problems with pea moth maggots - the downside of podded peas.

I do like fresh peas. I do! I do! Oh yes I do like fresh peas! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Sugar snaps are one of the givens around here ...  steam 'em, stir fry, eat raw and they start to crop just nicely before the french beans and don't stop until the runners are in full flow.

My first time with peas last year as I was given some purple podded seeds.  Did a few mangetout and some oasis as well.  This year I'm doubling the amount.... ::)
Peas we love 'em   :nowink: :nowink: :nowink:

Agree with Madcat - sugarsnaps are a good choice especially if you are short of space; productive over quite a long period and intrinsically better "value" as you eat the whole "fruit" (although if you leave them a bit too long you can shell them and eat just like regular peas.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I've just realised, I've never actually cooked my own peas either... apart from the mangetout and sugarsnaps in stir fry... all of the podded ones get munched raw on the spot, on the way home, or some have just about made it as far as becoming a salad...
But i'd never even consider defrosting frozen peas to eat them raw...  :tongue2:

On that basis... they're almost a completely different veg....?! Not comparable really... apart from being round and green...

There's a tall variety of sugar snap as well... for greater productivity...
