I plant dwarf ones (Twinkle) which are self supporting in a block so that saves both space and work.

Yes I like fresh peas and yes I like that additions to my compost heap from the crop. So a lot of positives.

Not forgetting, of course, the nitrogen benefit.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Every plot should have peas.  They are one of the vegetables that are so superior in flavour eaten straight after picking that it would almost be criminal not to grow them.  I like to weigh my produce so that I can see what has done well and relate it to the growing conditions, but I have to say pea quantity is a bit of a guess as not all made it home.

I got quite a good crop from a smallish section last year.  The trick is to pick as soon as you have a few pods ready.   More picking equals more pods to come.

Next year 2 sections will be devoted to peas - early - Hatif d'Annonay, which grow to 2 or 3 feet and are quite compact but v productive and the 8' high Champion of England maincrop.

So to answer your question, yes they are worth it.

I grew 6 x 12' rows last year. I'm going for 9 x 12' this year. All Hurst Greenshaft bought from Moles seeds by the Kilo.

There's a tall variety of sugar snap as well... for greater productivity...

Which variety is this?  (I only have room for 10m of peas)
Toiling through 100sq metres of clay - And I don't actually eat much veg!

I can't give you a definitive answer to that question - mine were bought from Wilkinsons, labelled merely as "sugar snap peas" with little or no extra information (particularly as to expected growing height), so I was a bit unprepared for the fact that they grew to about 7 feet!

I daresay a bit of "gougling" will point you to a variety with a bit more info than I had to work with!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Do not forget there are also mange tout and sugar snap varieties that are eaten pods and all.

Earlier as they are picked before the peas bulk up.

Bigger yield per yard.

No problems with pea moth maggots - the downside of podded peas.

I do like fresh peas. I do! I do! Oh yes I do like fresh peas! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Do mange tout and sugarsnap not get pea moth then?  I've always been put off because of that, but if they don't I might try some this year
