Potato question
« on: January 16, 2012, 06:45 »
I am eagerly awaiting this years seed potatoes turning up.   Yesterday I was preparing some new potatoes that I harvested  in November from bags I had moved into the green house.  All the potatoes were quite sound but one or two had just started to chit.

Well that got me thinking.  Could I use these as my seed potato.  The accepted wisdom seems to be no due to the potential of disease.  Apart from blight I thought that the main potato problems were pests or soil deficiencies.

So can blight live in the tuber?  Is there another disease I should worry about?  Has anyone resown their last years spuds and to what effect.  I suppose the potato seed manufacturers must do something similar

Read, mark, learn, inwardly digest, plant certified seed potatoes:

More specifically from one of our own:

I'm going to give it a try this year as I happen to have a load of nicely sized and sprouting Maris Peer. I wouldn't go on replanting every year as that does seem to be asking for problems.

It'll work fine, just not best practice or recommended. Probably safer doing it with bags where you change the compost each year but I wouldn't want to plant them in open ground on an allotment.
Faff free zone!

Try also washing your seed potatoes
All the top showers will wash the potatoes in warm water, in the idea of washing off anything which may cause disease
I know for fact that Sheri Plumb, National Potato Champion does this for this very reason and I don't believe there will be too many people know more than here for quality potatoes

Did you see how I've managed to get two cryptic references in already without being censored! (jolly = jol = a winter feast also known as yule)
