Sad day - the last of the few dozen sprout plants from 2011 have been harvested. Roll on this year' sprouts...

I've had two years of poor sprouts; they blow. I can grow good All Year Round Cauli's, but not sprouts. I've been told the ground is not firm enough when I plant out so I'll be changing tactic this year.

Also, it is a good idea to compost before planting sprouts as I’ve been told this can also cause them to blow?

Don't manure before planting, they're best in ground manured the previous year.

I run a very heavy lawn roller over my patch, (not when soggy), before planting.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have grown lovely sprouts this year, first time they haven't blown.
Now, can someone tell me how to make them grow bigger than peas please  ???

I use a fairly liberal sprinkling of FBB around the base of the stalks around August time, and ensure plenty of water and they get to a good size, while retaining that wonderful flavour.

I never do very well with sprouts, they usually blow.

I always get a few for winter festival dinner but thats about it from the usual sowing of and planting of around 12 plants!

They are firmed in and sometimes staked, i'll have another go again this year so we'll see, i'll give them a BFB feed too and see how they do. . . .

I pulled mine up yesterday and the leaves are now in the compost bin and the stalks are drying ready to be burned.
