Possible soft egg solution
« on: January 14, 2012, 16:13 »
I have an older hen who is consistantly laying soft eggs, she is 2.
Also one of my young birds is laying thin shelled eggs, this has just started and she has been laying alot.
The diet is not a problem, they get good quality layers pellets, grit, and a vitamin supp in the water containing Vit D. Before bedtime they get green veg and mixed corn.
I was chatting to a gent I have known for a number of years about a different matter, he is the herbalist for Dodson and Horrell, and mentioned the above problem and he recommended feeding seaweed.
So watch this space, I am going to buy some seaweed meal on monday and will let you know if it helps at all. At least it cannot do any harm

I once bought some seaweed for my girls and they wouldn't touch it  ::).
Try cutting out all treats and feed them just layers with access to crushed oyster shell all the time  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks I will, if that does not work I will do the seaweed. Had not thought they may not eat it, that would be just my luck haha.

Hi there I put a tonic in my water that contains seaweed and find this to work really well and I haven't had any problems since. This also helps with the moult. U can buy them cheap enough of eBay. Hope this helps🐔

I have always found limestone flour with a little cod-liver oil (helps the flour stick to the pellets and vit D for absorption/use of the calcium) works really well.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
