Can I use bark chippings as a mulch?
« on: January 14, 2012, 10:20 »
Hi I've got lots and lots of bark chippings left over from coverering my paths down the allotment. Can I use this as a mulch for fruit trees/bushes/blueberry plants etc? Sorry I don't know which type of bark it is. Just bought lots from a farm and ordered too much really. Any advice what to do with it all is much appreciated.

As the bark breaks down, it uses nitrogen from the soil, so is not perhaps the best thing to add to the surface.

I have used it on my blueberry bed, but over thetop of weed suppressant membrane to hold it down and it certainly looks more attractive.

All our paths are made like this too

I only have a small bed for the blueberries. Don't know what to do with the rest of the chippings. Shall I compost some and maybe see if other allotment holders on site would like some?

Offering some to other plot holders is a kindly thought and would be very well received.

Make sure your path mulches (if that is what you have) are about three -four inches thick though -- it does compact down a lot during the season
