Autumn Bliss Raspberry 5 years on!
« on: January 12, 2012, 12:15 »
Hi All,  Planted Autumn Bliss about 5 years ago but the size of the berry has diminished every year, last years the berries were no larger than wild blackberries.

Every winter I cut the canes down to 12" and feed with well rotted manure or Growmore.  I have noticed that the number of canes in Spring have increased per plant over the years and the growth has become spindly.

Any Ideas on what to do?  to bring the plants back to there 1st year vigour?  Or do I just grub up and start again?  I have also noticed the 'suckers' seem more vigorous than the main plant!

Any hints - tips would be appreciated.

Greenhead.

The canes need cutting right down.

Last year was not a good year for therm due to the dry weather, mine only reached half the size they should have.

There's no harm in starting a few more off if you have the space.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD, and a happy new year!  Should I limit the number of new canes coming through to say 5 or 6,  after 5 years the row is now like a hedge with many canes?

Mine like a hedge also! After 9 years, the only thinning back I've done are the suckers that grow a long way out.

Can these suckers be used as new plants?  Had suckers 3m away from the row.

Absolutely. That's how I acquired mine - from a fellow plot holder. (No I didn't help myself!).
