Can some clever person tell me what this is?

Hubby was clearing some land for a farmer and found this tree, with fruit on it. He brought one home - it's yellow, pear-shaped, and discolours very quickly when cut. It has a pear-type core, but tastes very bitter and is quite dry. It is about the size of a large pear, too. I'd really like to know if they are of any use as he has been told he can have any fruit from any of the trees!

Bet it's a quince. Is it fluffy on the outside?

Nope - shiny like a pear!

I just had a look on Wikipedia - and it looks like a quince! Apparently!

This stuff is so much easier when there's someone there that can point me in the right direction! Thank you very much!

My first thought was a quince. The one's I have come across are shiny, and look like Williams pears. However, I would say the core is more apple like. Does it have quite a fragrant smell?
