Sexing advice. (pic added).
« on: January 06, 2012, 17:17 »
My Gold laced orpington is now 28 weeks old. It is the only chicken out of the group that doesn't do the curtsey thing. I have also checked the position of the pelvic bones, they have not widened at all (unlike all the other chickens). So I'm unsure if it is a he or a she. Could it be that he/she is just a late developer?

orps often don't lay until they reach around 35 weeks so nothing to worry about yet  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyfull, not all of them are laying yet but I at least know they are girls. This one has me confuzzled though. What do you think?

PS the mud is outside their run, not inside.

I know nothing about orps but it looks feminine in a chickeny sort of way :)

Yes, that makes me unsure too. No pointy saddle feathers though.

At 28 weeks, I would have thought it would have a much bigger comb, a more upright stance and be crowing by now, so I think its a pullet too, although I have only had a couple of orpies in my time.

She/he is lovely though!   :)

Hi, i have gold laced orps which are 25 weeks old, i have had them from day olds and the breeder told me that if all the neck feathers turn gold it is a cockerel as the hens have black/gold necks.  i have attached photos of my boy and girl for you, hope this helps.

We have 11 Orps and I must admit, I can't be 100% about your gold lace.

The neck feathers very much resemble our cockerels neck feathers (he is now about 38 weeks and has been crowing for about 8 weeks), yet your Orp shows no sign of a tail feathers, in fact the back half looks very much female.

If I can to chose I would say cockerel purely from the neck feathers, but only time will tell I'm afraid.

Is your gold lace LF or bantam? The bantam we have, have a very small comb, so if it is a cockerel and there is bantam some where in its parentage, then that might account for the smaller comb.
