Dead daphnea
« on: January 05, 2012, 21:00 »
There was a lovely daphnea bush in the front of the house when we moved here which I lovingly moved to the backgarden so we didn't squash it when we renovated the cottage. It surprizingly setled down and was flowering in profusion every spring for about 10-12 years .
Until two years ago.

My sister came around and decided to tare bits off it in midsummer for cuttings, about 20 big bits >:(.It started to weaken in a couple of months and one of the branches died completly.I sawed that back to a healthie bit but over the next year it died completly. There was sap under the bark so I left it there to see if it would sprout again but there was nothing last spring .It was completly dry by now so I've given up and dug it up.

Im a bit concerned that it might be honey fungus. Is there anything I can do to try and stop it or do as a precaution just incase it's the dreaded fungus. The other possibility is that as my dear sister tore the bits off rather than use secateurs that it's bleed to death.Anybody got any ideas

Honey fungus produces white strands under the bark, low down near the ground, where the roots of the plant start.

Usually there are also yellowy toadstools that grow too, but not always.

If there are neither of these, it will not have been killed by honey fungus.

Daphne plants do not really like being pruned much, and can just give up sometimes

I thought honey fungus was black strands, not white.

But it's relatively unusual.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I found a photo here.

I think some species can have black strands in the soil ----- there is more than one sort
