Too late/early to sow broad bean?
« on: January 05, 2012, 16:21 »
I've been given some seeds for Christmas, including some broad bean 'aquadulce'. I've never grown broad beans before. The packet says sow anytime between autumn and spring.

Can I really sow them now? Are they really as hardy as garlic?

I might just start them off in pots first, just to help get them started - what do you think?

Ta.

That's what I did last year - start them off in pots in the greenhouse or cold frame :)

Never grown these before so what size pots should they be grown in?, and when would be the right time to plant them out?

1 seed per 3" pot in a good compost. Larger pots will be fine.
They take about 4 - 6 weeks (depends on temperature) before hardening off, any longer and they become pot bound with the tap root growing out of the bottom of the pot.
They need to be hardened off well before planting out sometime in March when the ground / weather is suitable.

Thanks, but we seem to have gone off on a discussion about potting up, rather than my main question about timing. Serves me right for asking two questions in one post - it never works.

So, is it too early/late to sow these now?

Ta.

The chart suggests leave it until February now but if you have enough seeds to experiment, why not try some now and leave most until next month?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You didn't hijack anything Andy.

I also thought, Fisherman gave quite good details, including timing as much as possible. This will vary by location and individual spot (frost pockets, etc.).

In Devon, I probably would chuck them in outside, now even. There is one serious reason for indoor sowing: mice and birds.

Bear in mind you might still get mice in your greenhouse though  ;)

Mine are sown in 3 ins pots in the just frost fee greenhouse (aquadulce) and I hope for 100% germination.

Sowed them on 2nd Janaury.

Later than this would be fine of course, up to about April outside tbh

No problem. I do it regularly. Cheers for the link.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I think I'll pot a third of them up (I have 35 seeds) netted against mice).

Just looking for advice on the same bean....Ive aquired a packet of aquadulce but is it to late now to sow them in modules in the greenhouse...reason I cant put them out yet is the place they are going isnt quite ready so I wanted to try get a head start on them. Or do i need to find a later sowing variety? If so which is easiest for someone whos never grown broad beans before.

Hi, I'm from South Devon. Aquadulce are a variety of broad bean that can be planted in the autumn. They will grow on until the cold weather of winter and go into a dormancy period above ground. They can survive a degree or two of frost. I lost all mine during the severe winter last year. They can still be sown now. I also recommend starting off in pots at home. My friend lost all his bean seeds to burrowing mice a couple of weeks ago. Don't let the plants become too tall before planting out.
