Slug and snail patrol in the rain. The eggshell defences are effective in the dry but seem to become quite ineffectual when it rains. We don't really like using slug pellets in case there is a detrimental effect on the common salamanders.

Had a significant thunderstorm and downpour last night; soil didn't even stick to my boots today; the ground was a little easier to dig - it's one of the few benefits of light sandy soil.
Walk on it IN the rain, however, and bring a pick axe the day after!  :D
Sooo..............planted my Sweet Chocolate peppers, planted a couple more Longa Serpente,  and weeded the onions, shallots and first and second earlies.
Came home early as it looked like rain - it didn't.

Had a really good afternoon. Weeded every cleared area of my plot (properly), still digging up bindweed roots. Made another wigwam for my beans out of my coppiced hazel. Planted more climbing and dwarf beans. Also planted out Custard Marrow, sweetcorn (now wondering with the weather if this was a good idea?), French Sorrel, Chervil and Salad Burnet. Mulched around the strawberries with straw, lots turning red now.

Quick visit to the plot today as I was doing some overdue tidying in the garden instead. I had time to earth up the spuds and pulled a few weeds also watered the raised bed because it dries out really quickly, the rest still felt damp so I left it, the sky was black and it was drizzling when I left so I am hoping for some rain tonight.....in vain I expect......

I finished digging the 1st strip of Kitchen Garden at the LPB (Little Pink Bungalow) and stuck in some compost from the heap, stout canes then the runner beans.. finished off with a can or two of water and sprinkling of blue-pellets (sorry slugs!)

Should be sufficient to keep my parents fed and interested enough to go for an outing to the end of the garden (with a bit of help)  ;)

Planted out runner beans. Two varieties this year, The Czar which did well for me last year and Gordon's stringless.  These are from saved seed from another plotholder called, not surprisingly, Gordon. Also planted Cherokee Trail of Tears climbing pole bean again, they were also good last year, and climbing Borlotti beans, Lingua di Fuoco.  Hope they will be OK.  Fully hardened off, but it seems quite cold, but it is June!

OH did some soil sifting and weeding.  Had a chat and a bacon sarnie with fellow plotholders.
