Waded to the plot, admired the puddles, noted that there is no sign of the potatoes yet, and squelched over to the association AGM (thankfully in a marquee)

Got a load of digging done yesterday... first time I could get to the plot for 10 days.. due to rain.. (i'm a fair weather farmer!!)  I now only have a 2mt x 5 strip left to dig... double digging has proved a good idea as I have removed huge loads of perennial weed and grass roots.. had a few rather large bonfires lately.. but now I have 4 wheelie bins full and need some sun to dry them before I can burn!
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

Nothing too wet to even venture out, going tomorrow as given a "dry" day
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Took a look in a fine spell this evening, heavy overnight rain and wind has battered  my autumn sown broad beans, shallots planted a couple of weeks ago sit in puddles of water,
Tried to fork around shallots to get rid of water this had no effect as ground is water logged.
Having said all this I have got away light looking around the other plots on the site.
Retired but never short of a job.

Decided to at least achieve something today it can rain all it likes:

  • Weeded onion & garlic bed
  • Covered a grassy area with carpet to kill it off before raised bed construction
  • check spuds... They are up :) really thought this rain would kill them off with all the water, need to bank them up next week end

Need to make some decisions on snal control though... , sprouts and cabbages are looking good, they where a bit hit and miss to start with and the strawberrys look to happy.

Plot very wet but managed to weed one of the raised bed. Also put chicken wire and fine netting around my Pea Wigwam. It's now ready for planting peas later this week.
Had a lovely conversation with a fellow allotmenteer. It's not often I see anyone on weekdays.

Earthed up the potatoes where they were showing.  Did a bit of wedding although the soil is still a bit wet, so that was limited.  Relieve there didn't seem any particular damge by the high winds, although a bag ful of rubbish had been blown onto my plot which I removed.  Harvested some Rhubarb from my neighbours plot that they have given up :)

Woo Hoo! Sunshine! Spent all day at the lottie mostly digging and clearing beds ready for planting. Removed several bags full of bindweed. Planted some white strawberries - hope that they taste nice! Gorgeous day that vanished far too quickly.
