"Last year we had kohl rabis coming out of our ears! "

Apart from the obvious wonderment (and possible embarrassment, maybe even interested yearning) of this, Mazz, how did you use them please, because we're up for a row (30 ft) this year!

Everybody said before several times how it's used. Just in this one thread, let alone the whole site.

Sorry! My mistake....I grew CAPE Gooseberries. Tried the pineapple and the normal ones from seed indoors and planted out into large pots outside. They were fine outside.
They are perennial but mine got late blight (!) so I ripped them up before it could spread to potatoes and toms but got loads of little fruit that were very perfumed and citrussy when orange. Would've had lots more ripen if the weather had been better.......
I've got seed left so will grow them again this year and hope for some sun!

This year im looking at Amaranth and to try soya beans again

I found both of these disappointing, probably both due to the weather - the flowers of the Amaranth were lovely but no seed, and the soya beans didn't amount to anything either.

I've grown Quinoa which is basically a cultivated version of Fat Hen - lovely flowers, masses of seed, although takes some doing washing them (have a saponin coating which is why birds don't eat them) but well worth it.

Last year I grew Achocha (Fat Baby) which grew into trailing monsters and certainly a talking point at the allotment with loads of weird spikey fruit that has a mild flavour which tastes a bit like raw squash/cucumber which you can eat raw or cooked.

I grew Anchocha last year BabbyAnn as well  :)  I trained them up a runner bean style bamboo cane row which contained them a bit, but they tried trailing off to lassoo the sweetcorn next door  :D

I got so many I ended up letting them get a bit bigger, halving and deseeding them and putting them in the dehydrator.

Now got a couple of big jars of dried fruits which I chuck into anything that would usually suit peppers as they have a green pepper flavour - chilli, spicy tomato based stews, that sort if thing.  Also saved seeds for this year   :)

Mum - you are well organised.  Not even bought my notebook for this year yet

Hello Growster  :)  Kohl rabi are like a cross between those big white mooli radishes and turnip.  Mild, sweet and crunchy so a natural for coleslaw and salad.  I think they get lost a bit when cooked, but I've heard they make a very nice soup.  Not tried this yet, but with a 30 foot row I guess you need some options
