My season starts now!
« on: December 22, 2011, 15:43 »
Well, it's that time of year........ at least for my Onions!!  :)
As tradition dictates, I will be sowing my onions seeds (Kelsae, Ailsa Craig & Globo) on Boxing Day, however, until then, it's time to bring my bags of JI no.1 in and warm them up for a few days.
I've got just the spot for them behind the sofa... and I'm sure the Mrs wont mind...  :D :D

It's time to start sowing onion seeds now then?
I'd better go out and buy some and also some of whatever it is you put them in!

Oh yeah and some trays

Do they need to be somewhere warm then?
How warm?
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

I do start mine in the utility windowsill - darn cold for a house - in Jan-Feb.

I start my show onions on Boxing Day, onions just for the kitchen are started about the 1st of march.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

No, you do not. I have never felt the need for one.

Onions in particular, do not need much heat to germinate.

I'm with gobs - never felt the need for a propagator, polythene bags have always been good enough for me.

Grew "The Kelsae" for the first time this year. Germinated in a frost free greenhouse in January. Ended up with about 80 onions between 2 1/2 & 3 lb each.

Maybe next year I'll put some effort into it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
