Is it too late to plant some garlic?
« on: December 16, 2011, 22:30 »
Well?

I forgot to get some, and I don't know if I'm too late to get some in. I'm in South Essex if that's any help.

Cheers

You'll be able to get some spring planted varieites.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would have a go, if you plant a bulb of garlic and it doesn't germinate - what's it going to cost??? If it does germinate - just think of the benefits!!!

Do not bother trying to plant supermarket garlic.  It will be a variety unsuited to our climate and runs an increased risk of having pests or diseases.

You will be unlikely to source autumn planted garlic now - most places will either have run out, or have stored them for a long time in an unsuitable location.

Do you have friends or allotment pals who could spare a few cloves? You can always ask.

I planted some on boxing day one year, but it was autumn planted variety, cloves were a bit small but well flavoured

Get some autumn seed bulbs and plant them asap.
As long as the individual cloves are fat, not withered, they will be fine to plant. They still had decent quality seed in my local garden centre during the week :)

My autumn ones got planted in March of this year.

Had a cracking crop. Try and avoid  supermarket ones for the reasons Yorkie stated.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I managed to get the last packet of garlic in our local garden centre.

Thanks for all your replys (especially you bazh, that must've hurt. Gooner? :))

How deep, and how far apart do I plant it?

I start my garlic cloves in fibre pots  in a propagator in January and then plant out with the onion sets and shallots  in March and always get a decent crop. I've never really understood this fetish about Autumn planting

It is not a fetish Alan, it is what we do to be able to extend the harvest time for onoins, shallots and garlic.

For me, it is not instead of Spring planting, it is as well as

I wondered about that as well  :D

They are supposed to need a period of cold in order to split properly into cloves, aren't they?
