Plant through fabric?
« on: December 16, 2011, 19:09 »
I've just read this   'Plant through fabric,no weeding'.
I know it sounds self explanatory but what exactly does it involve.
Sorry about all the questions I am posting

Is it one which doesn't need holes poked or cut in it? What is it called? :)

Sounds like they're just saying to plant in a hole made in weedproof membrane laid on the ground. No weeding because of the weedproof membrane.

After the barrier is laid, a small X is made in the fabric and the whatever is planted in the centre of the X.

Remember you still need to prepare the soil underneath if you're going to get a decent crop. I often plant courgettes through membrane.

I've planted our gooseberries like that, as it is postively dangerous weeding near them

Only negative thing I can say is that slugs etc will love it under there, and you will need to get rid of perennial weeds like couch grass and mares' tail as they can penetrate the fabric. :nowink:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
