Buying seed potatoes.
« on: December 01, 2011, 14:23 »
I'm starting to look at potatoes wondering what I might like to grow next year but as it will be my first time growing on the allotment. The question is how many seed potatoes will I need for a row? I've only every grown them in bags before.  ::)

How long is a piece of string (or a row),  all depends you see.   6" deep 12" apart and rows 24" apart to give you an idea.

I'm lucky enough to have a Garden Centre where you can buy one tuber or a hundred and examine each one before you buy so you don't get the situation where you squeeze them in to use them up.      Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

At my garden centre you can buy as many as you can squeeze into a paper bag so I'm always in the situation where I'm trying to use them up :)

That's about a medium length of string then, but is it metric or imperial???  :)

John's advice tells you how far apart you need to plant them, depending on whether they are earlies, 2nds or main crop.

so you can work out how many you need  ;)

My seed spud order is done.  ;)
My actual rows measure 15ft 5" and I want 4 rows. So I've ordered 2.5kg Swift and 2.5kg Kestrel. Hope that sounds about right.

Tuber sizes vary but you shouldn't be to far out with that.

I like to buy them like shokky as well, from our local market, but am never sure how much tuber size matters...if you get smaller ones, you get more tubers (and thus more plants) for the weight/in the bag but will bigger ones produce stronger plants with more/bigger tubers?

At my garden centre you can buy as many as you can squeeze into a paper bag so I'm always in the situation where I'm trying to use them up :)
