Hi all, first allotment with my son in law , we've just built 3 raised beds and put up 2 polytunnels , so we just need to keep out the rabbits Iam open to all Idea's ,prepairing for next year to hit the gounding runing

Our site adjoins farmland so is rife with rabbits

Those of us that have rabbit proof fencing ---- small size chicken wire (baby rabbits can squeeze through the bigger size easily) buried 15 - 20 cm deep, bounding our plots, and clsoely fitting gates with a paving slab under them so no burrowing undeer the gate allowed --- are OK

Those without should be down there around sunset to see the rabbits scoff the veg   :blink:


PS It is 1m high -- they can easily jump over anything lower

Don't just bury the netting but bury it and turn it back six inches as the rabbits go right up to it then start to dig down. If they find more wire running horizontally they tend to give up...at least in theory.

I agree with my fellow Cumbrian. One bit of good (or bad) news depending on how humane you are; Myxomatosis had devastated our rabbit population in this area

 like most we all use rabbit wire on our Lottie as said buried into the ground we found its a good deterrent without that wire wouldn't have any brassicas i also net the top to stop the pigeons

i tried using a chemical deterrent a complete waist of time and money set one day gone the next i left a lovely crop of french beans without any protection very foolish on my part wiped out after much raising in the greenhouse for rabbit food

lets face it if you spend time and effort raising them planting them you must protect them
get  good quality netting and yes discarded scaffolding netting is ideal i use it

Or climb....  Our garden is surrounded by field and as such is suitably rabbit netted as already described. I've seen them doing that though, to try and get in.
