What size container for grapevine?
« on: November 27, 2011, 18:49 »
If growing a grapevine in a polytunnel in a container what size would the container have to be, any suggestions??  Thought of maybe a waterbutt with the top quatre cut off. Surely that would give it enough root space or would I be wrong??

Grapevines prefer to go down a very long way to seek water and nutrients, which is how they make sweet fruit.

You can try the highest container you can find, but it would be good only for the first year or two before the roots start curling at the bottom. I swear that grapes are the original 'roots to China' plant.

Hi infowarrior what Trillium says is right and the ideal way to grow a vine, but they can be grown successfully in pots my mother law has one in a very large pot that is thriving and is in it's 5th year I don't know the variety but the taste of the fruit is fantastic and it's prolific fruiting wise and growth, they can get a bit wild.

It does need to be a very large pot though -- I'd go for the biggest you can fit in imho

Why don't you just grow it in the ground inside your polytunnel?

Just for lack of space in my raised beds really but considering peoples responses I might try to make some space.  If I was going to use a container I would have full control of the exact soil type used and not have to gamble with the heavy clay soil that's under the decent stuff in tunnel when the roots get really deep.

I don't think the vine will mind heavy clay subsoil tbh  :D

Ok, cheers for the replies.  Think I'll knock the container idea on the head.

Ok, cheers for the replies.  Think I'll knock the container idea on the head.

I have had a vine in the 8 x 10ft green house for 25 yrs, and we have every heavy clay here (used to be used for bricks back in the day)

I keep it well pruned on a framework and it gives a brilliant crop most years. (Black Hamburg)

I never water it (gets everything it needs from the ground --- it is planted right against the back glass so roots go outside under the framework.

When I lived in Teesdale I had a vine in a large lean-to greenhouse but it was rooted outside and the stem brought through a hole in the brick wall of the greenhouse. As others say, they need a deep root run and sufficient minerals to form the pips as well as the fruit. Mine was planted on top of a dead sheep. Apparently they like to extract phosphorous from the rotting bones.

It is best to plant it so that the roots are outside, so you will not need to water it.
