hungry hens/ not eating pellets
« on: November 20, 2011, 12:39 »
Hi
We have three hens, last few days noticed very hungry running to fence when ever we go out towards them
They are not eating the pellets
We have got some corn/seeds/meelworm and they are enjoying that ??
Should we try corn or other feeds like the pellet mash
Any suggestions very appreciated
Only one hen producing eggs at moment
All look well tails up and feeding just not on the pellets
Thank you

All you need to do is stop giving them the treats for a couple of weeks!  They are leaving their pellets because you are giving them nicer food!

These hens are not daft you know

I agree with min200. Stop all food apart from pellets, they may go a day, maybe a day and a half at a real stretch without touching them, they will crow pathetically like they are about to die, look at you pleadingly with those little orange eyes but don't give in!. Eventually they will tuck into the pellets when they are hungry enough and they realise you have rumbled their little game ;)

I'm no expert - total novice in fact - but I agree, I think they're holding out for the good stuff.

I wormed mine a couple of weeks ago and wanted to make sure the powder stayed on the pellets, so I added warm water and made porridge. Now they won't eat dry pellets, and if I'm stubborn and don't give in, they belligerently scatter them all over the place. Huh!!

They are optimists and run to the fence in case you have treats to offer, which often you do. You need to reduce amount of treats they are fattening and fat hens do not lay :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
