Found the varmints!!
« on: November 16, 2011, 00:42 »
I thought that, despite profuse use of blue pellets, my spring cabbages were being mauled to shreds by slugs/snails.
I've just done a slug hunt with torch and scissors but it isn't slugs! They are caterpillars!!!Shock horror....AND the bed is debris netted!
The blighters are mottled brown so what butterfly could it be? They've ignored the lettuce and got really stuck into the cabbage......Grrrrr! >:(

Could be angle shades moths' caterpillars.

Now that makes me think -- could that be how only one lettuce in my minitunnel has been chewed almost to extinction........

and there was me blaming slugs

That's the one 8Doubles! There are green ones and brown ones. Managed to get a couple but I'm sure there are more looking at the damage.....probably in the earth now, full of my cabbage, pupating!! ::)

A really useful link, that one 8Doubles  :D

and yes, they probably are pupated in the soil so have a dig aroun--- won't be more than two inches down I shouldn;t think.

The birds will soon gobble them up if you leave them out some where for them to find.
