Dahlias another question
« on: November 15, 2011, 09:48 »
A few of the dahlias i grew from seed this year are still flowering and we haven't had a severe enough frost to kill top growth.   Should i dig them up now or still wait for frost?
thanks

It really doesn't matter. Frost will get them in the end. Sometimes its more convenient for the gardener to dig them up at a better time, which is what I do because I can't predict when our snows will hit. For years I've simply cut the top growth off, leaving a few inches at the base, then dug up the root, shook out most of the dirt, then kept the bulb mass upside down for a few days so any water inside the shoots can drain out.

I now have massive root systems that I now have to start giving away some because I just don't have space for all of them.

I keep mine in a cool, frost free room for winter. If I have it on hand, I pack some dry peat moss around them, or, dust them with sulphur powder to prevent rot.

They'll dry out a bit during storage but pot them up around March, water, and they'll be ready in a few months to plant out.

I dug up my dahlias over 6 weeks ago.  Needed to generally tidy the garden up, so I dug them up, and trimmed some bushes, etc, etc, etc.  My dahlias have been in the garden shed all cosy and dark

Some Dahlia are not tuberous. if you grew them from seeds, they can be also annuals, but hopefully, you know this.

In that case, of course, there is nothing to dig up.

You can let the tubers grow and cut the shoots before they go hollow, dip them in root hormone powder pot them up. The amount you get will depend on the size of the tuber.

Actually the ones we grew from seed did have small  tubers, so I have dug these up and hope they will start back into growth around end of February/March  :)

I have left mine in pots, just put them in the greenhouse. Should I take them out of the pots?

Dahlias are of the potato family and can be stored in trays in a dry ,cool and frost free shed or spare room even. check them regularly discarding any that show signs of rot.
If the tubers start to dry/shrivel up they can be put in a basin of water to swell up again. Drying them and then back into storage. Works for me :)

ALL true dahlias will form a tuber, even those grown from seed or cuttings, if they are given the correct growing conditions and a long enough growing season.

Good job. Of course, you can do all sorts from seed.
