Stringy Parsnips
« on: November 13, 2011, 18:41 »
Hey everyone, we have had a few complaints at work that the parsnips from our market garden are slightly stringy, does anyone know what causes this so we can try and improve the for next year? :)

FYI - The variety was Gladiator :)

Thanks :)

Gladiator is my favourite parsnip variety Jamie - my guess would be that they had insufficient water during the very changeable but also unusually dry summer in many parts of Yorkshire.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Gosh - dry - lucky you. I have yet to lift any, and am waiting for the frosts to sweeten them for Crimbo.  What is your type of soil, because if it is sandy, it will need more watering than the norm.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Um, are you asking me or Jamie?

My soil is extremely sandy but it's not me with the stringy parsnips!

The soil at work is rather clayey if im honest, but theyve formed very good sized parsnips and havent forked :)

It only seems to be a few that are stringy, but if i can try and avoid this in the future, it would be good :D
