Best time for pruning apple trees?

Best time for pruning apple trees?

When is the best time to prune young (3 year old) apple  trees ?
I have read conflicting advice, where some people advise now, and others seem to think that spring is best. Any advice would be most welcome.

Prune over the winter period to shape tree

summer pruning restricts growth and promotes fruiting spurs on dwarf trained trees.

So if you have small trees, which you wish to stay small..............you'll need to do both  :)
