« on: November 12, 2011, 12:49 »

Ive seen various posts on our local freecycle asking for old cooking oil to heat greenhouse over the winter,, Ok I can get hold of alot of this stuff but do we just just put it in a normal paraffin heater type thing or is there some other way???

another ?    what is the best weedkiller to use at this time of year?  general weeds,, need to clear a large space but don,t have time to dig it but it will cause problems next year If i cannot clear it,,  any advice appreciated..

don't know about the cooking oli thing, but it's too late to use weedkiller, I think.

They have to be used when the weeds are actively growing, rather than just sitting around waiting for spring.

Please don't use cooking oil in your paraffin heater. It's just not that simple.

Here's more specific info on using it, which I suspect you'll not bother with:

The idea of using cooking oils is to convert them into biodiesel fuel which is then used in specially converted units. Its a great deal of work. Also, in the UK, the government requires taxation on it as if you bought fuel. So, lots to think about.

Have a look on youtube, lots of shed tinkerers on there making heaters using old cooking oil.

Might pay to up your fire insurance if you decide to have a go. :D

One can legally use 2500 litres of veg oil a year free of tax to fuel a diesel car, do other rules apply to use for heating then?
