ok raise the level of the soil by a foot in the area you can allow .i make a raised bed by raking up the soil into a level mound a yard wide and as long as possible ,remember to dig the soil all over the bed to get the maximum depth of loose soil .dont stand on it at all ,, get a long vareity of carrots i like FLAK . sow along the bed rake in water and leave for nature to work its magic . do not water unles a drought is in force .they only grow long searching for water and they will grow right to august sept through to be 8 to 12 inch long and 2 inch thick .... great for freezing and storing
still alive /............

You could try broadcast sowing, rather than rows.

you dont have to thin them. the looose ness of the soil makes the carrots push it aside... make sure you leave it loose and no fresh manure /compost

sow and just rake in lightly and water its as easy as that matey
