transplanted comfrey query

hi,

about 6 weeks ago, I got some bocking 14 comfrey (it grows wild onsite) and  dug over a 7 ft x 4 ft bed, and put 10 or 12 of the roots in. they've gone ape, some of the leaves are over a foot long x 8 inches wide.

Can i give it a trim now? or is it too soon... Most of the roots when transplanted had only one leaf, it's astounding how they've come along.
They look like this.

Leave them to die down naturally this year.  Take a light cut next year.  Can take 3 cuts a year thereafter.  Top dress annually with manure (even fresh pigeon manure is okay for comfrey)

It looks very close together.  30" apart each way is what I'd recommend

looks just fine to me - exactly like my long established comfrey patch!
I would give the leaves a cut now and put on compost heap / make liquid feed with etc. - best to wear gloves 'cause the hairy leaves can cause skin irritation.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Yours are long established Milky, these are young ones and for that "they look very close together".

I have mine planted out two rows along a 4ft bed, with 2ft between each one in the row, and belive me they need every inch of that when they get established. So your's might end up a little overcrowded. Might be worth taking out a couple, just to give the rest room.

I would leave them this year though, just to get established. They need to build up a few reserves to get through the winter. Next year you can srart cutting them at about 18 inches high...you should get three to four cuts from them per year.

When I sowed them, i didn't have a clue so did them about 8" apart. I'll leave them to die down naturally as suggested.
