Who grows celeriac?
« on: October 29, 2011, 20:30 »

Ok, I know, bit of an idiot question.

Probably everyone I think.

Is it easy to grow just like every other veg, any 'special' requirements?

I've tried and failed with celeriac several times so I wouldn't say it was that easy to grow, compared to things like beetroot.

It takes a long time to mature so an early sowing is important then lots and lots of watering seem to be the key.  I never seem to get enough water on them so end up with very small roots  :(

Oh well we can't be brilliant at everything eh Mum  ;)  We'll put celeriac and planting in straight lines in the 'too difficult' box and move on

Need lots of water?? Long time to mature? Hmmm

Got just the spot for next year (can they follow leeks?), sunny yet it seems to hold to moisture better than the rest of the plot.

I too have failed with celariac. Teeny weeny titchy tiny seedlings which were a pain to prick out and they repaid my by sitting there looking at me for 2 months before finally keeling over and dying.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I've got some good ones this year and they're out on the plot and have not been watered.  I let them get to a decent size before planting them out. I enriched the soil with manure which probably helped moisture retention.  Got some good sizes ones this year, so well chuffed

Me too - though I did well 2008 when we had a wet summer (and my tomatoes keeled over with blight - you win some, you lose some)  They were huge ... but then slugs and woodlice somehow burrowed up from underneath  >:(

When the top growth starts getting thick you must remove the outer leaves,  this  will let light and air get to the roots and help them to swell.

There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Is it too late to do that now? I've got quite a few in although might lose some if I get to swap 1 of my plots :(

I've got about 20 growing in half a 10' bed, with parsnips in other half (logic being that they both are ready about same time), so only manured the celeriac half...really noticeable that the biggest are at the far end from the parsnips, where I guess more manure ended up...
