Garlic
« on: October 26, 2011, 13:50 »
I planted some garlic in modules about a week and a half ago and was just wondering how long they will take to start sprouting?. I know you can plant them straight out but I read somewhere (Gardener's World I think) that you can get a head start by putting them in modules first. I've planted them with the tips sticking out but no sign of any sprouting yet. Am I just being impatient?

Thanks,
PonyGirl

yes, you are  ;) I usually plant mine deeper than you've done yours, but

they should be making a lot of root growth before the tops start to grow :)

Oh good, I'll resist the urge to poke them then! I read that November's the last chance to plant them out so didn't know if I should dig them up and plant them straight out in the veg bed...

They can be planted as soon as you want to, they are completely hardy ;)

I too have planted them in 3" pots as my new lottie is not ready to plant out yet... I'll plant as early as pos in spring.. They can take a few days to a few weeks to peek through. I planted two lots  a week ago and half are through on the one lot and only 2 on the other lot.. Just don't worry as not much will stop them from growing. It depends on how close to sprouting they were when you bought them. They all are kept at different temps in the shops and some will sprout a lot quicker than others. I just bought a few more bulbs today so going to have a mega crop. In total now have 10 bulbs all planted out. I love garlic!!

Can I ask why you have  planted the cloves in modules/pots ? I have always planted mine outside with good results. Am I missing something  ;) ;)
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

Ponygirl said in her post that GW suggested it gives a head start.  Gavinjconway said in his post that the lotty isn't ready for the garlic yet.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I love garlic too! I planted 6 bulbs straight out in September, which are already flourishing quite nicely though they were cloves from this year's home grown so I don't know if they'll be any good.

I've planted 12 in modules which I bought from the garden centre. I was going to plant them out once they started sprouting. They're outside at home in the modules so maybe I should have just put them straight out - just thought it'd be easier to keep an eye on them and stop birds pulling them out until they get established, as I only get to go up to my plot at the weekends.

Am very new to gardening - it's a whole new world!

My soil is mostly clay and tends to hold a bit of water over winter so i don't sow until the midle of february.

I do however store the bulbs/cloves in the fridge from november until planting time and find that once they are planted (under a cloche) they get going very quickly and bulb up really well.

I am also on clay, which gets VERY soggy in the winter. Planted my garlig on ridges, in the hope they wont rot. First time of trying, so fingers crossed!

I've planted mine last week (last year, I planted them back end of December), and they still come up ok.  I can't be bothered to put them in modules, they just go straight in the ground, saves disturbing them.
