Growing blackcurrant cuttings
« on: October 24, 2011, 15:02 »
I'm aware that, generaly speaking, I can cut bits my black currants, plant them, and more bits of black currant will grow, but I'm a bit blind on the specifics, when should I cut, and is it best to plant outside, o0r should I pot them first?

For me, the easiest way to propagate any of the currants is to make a nick on a lower stem and just under a leaf node, then either pin down or weight down (with a rock or brick) the cut bit so it has good contact with the soil and leave it. This is known as layering. And there's no bother whatsoever with this method.

By next spring, all those nicked stems will have rooted and can be dug up and planted to their new homes. All currants want to grow and this is the easiest way to make more.

I cut some tops off my blackcurrant bushes  and stuck them in water.Changed the water every day for a couple of weeks and found little white roots coming from the bottom inch or two of the cutting.I`m not sure when the best sort of time might be to do this,i did it in June and planted my new small plants out about 3 weeks ago.

Around this time I hard pruned my blackcurrant bush some yrs ago, & dropped the cuttings in a bucket of water. 2 -3 weeks later, I noticed some roots had grown so I gave all the cuttings away bar 2. They're thriving away quite happily  :).

Must remember to hard prune those new bushes  ::)
