Bay tree's, strawberries and rhubarb
« on: October 01, 2007, 21:18 »
hi again everyone,

i am in the middle of planning my veg patch for next year and i since cutting some of the brambles back etc i have come across a bay tree...only problem is its right where i wanted to put some veg, its about 2 1/2 feet tall

can i move it or should i route my veg patch round it?

also there is a rhubarb plant in the way that i wanted to move, i understand if i cut it back then put it in a ready made hole it should be ok...is now the time to do it? and is there anything i should be careful of?

finally the coldframe is full of strawberries which are still fruiting.

once they have finished fruiting is it worth cutting back all of the plants for over winter or should they just be left alone?

sorry for all the questions im only used to growing stuff in my green house.

cheers
moggy

ps not veg related but there is also a bamboo type plant in the way which i dont really want to bin, when would be the best time to move it?
It's Chilli up North.

move the bay with a large rootball. predug hole .... dont feed it ... move rhubarb as you say .strawbs can be moved when they stop floweing .just leave the top off the coldframe they will stop flowering then,,,   let em die back and then move them ,, search  strawberries and you will find lots of info on how to care for them   :D and welcome to the gang :)
still alive /............

cheers mate, the cold frame just has a wire mesh over the top so is currently outdoors, had some cracking strawbs off it since we picked up the keys to the new house.

ill hopefully get time at the weekend to move the bay etc and measure the veg plot as i was hoping to raise it up a bit and put a little path between.

cheers
Moggy

As he says, Moggy, but then he is used to know what he is doing.

With the rhubarb thing, you got to go way down and it is still going to be there for you, if it's an old , established plant.

And the bamboo type thing, if it is a bamboo, can get way out of control easily... watch it!

bay trees can be temperamental - bit like munty   - so be careful where you transplant it - out of the way of cold winds is a good start - they don't like being moved - so as mentioned before - take as big a rootball as possible.

I planted some rubarb this year - with some small stalks on it. Put pelleted chicken manure underneath and on the top. It's done fab, it grew massive. Maybe add some underneath to help it in its new home, but not too much. Then give it a good dose in the spring when it reappears.
