compact crop, any sugestions?

I have a hen that has compact crop. I have turned her upside down to see if any fluid runs out, but nothing and there is no bad smell from her mouth or sign of thrush. So my next step was to carfully syringe some warm cod liver oil into her beak and massage her hard crop. I then gave her some runny porridge with cod liver oil in it as she seems so hungry. Should i do any more?

Thanks joyfull, ive just read this infact. found it by doing a search! Yep deffinitly impacted crop. So hopefully ive done the right thing. Any ideas how long it will take to dislodge?

You may have to treat her over a few days, gently massaging the crop each time. Probiotic yoghurt (non flavoured) can help as well.

I caught her aagain and did the oil and massage. Her crop seems much softer but not empty. Ive decided to leave her for a couple of days see if it wiil clear the rest on its own. She hates being caught!!

Gibbo, I would just like to double-check something with you.

Every chicken should have a fullish crop during the day when she has been browsing, and especially in the evening when she tops it up before bed. Sometimes when you feel her crop at this time it will feel like it has been packed quite hard and you can feel what she has been eating - eg pellets or hard grains.

It's only first thing in the morning that you can tell if you have a problem. It's only if her crop is full before she has eaten any breakfast that you need to worry.

Yer it was in the morning that i checked her. It looked so rounded and felt rock hard. I checked her again today though and it felt nice and squidgy. Think she is ok now. Just wondering if her turquoise poo's were related to the crop problem??
