Very late Swedes
« on: October 20, 2011, 22:05 »
Ive been given a tray full of very small swede plants, I reckon its completely the wrong time of year for them to be planted out, but I was just wondering if there is any chance of them doing anything?  If they will survive being planted out now how long are we looking at before they are ready?  I know they are normally 6-8 months in the ground, would it be longer?

They won't grow very much over winter and then I think as soon as it warms up in spring I think they will flower. I don't think you'll get anything worth eating, but you can only try...there's nothing to lose  ;)

Could you not eat the leaves as a green?

Hi LottieLady, I sow mine late Sping/early Summer and they normally take anywhere between 20-26 weeks to reach maturity, so they are usually ready Autumn time but can be left to mid-winter time if not too cold.
I agree with MOS, if they are planted now and IF they survive not only the winter, but slugs, pigeons etc, they may just flower and go to seed.

But then again, nothing ventured, nothing gained.... good luck.  :)
