Walking along the park today, I picked loads of conkers - just like the look and feel of them, and I wanted to find out if they were edible. Now I know they are not. Wish I could pick some chestnuts from someplace though, rather than from the shops :( .

Around here, you'll find them in parks. However, you may be disappointed in the size. They grow better in climates like Spain etc..
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I got them with the F&V box last year. Didn't see where it was from, but I'll sure look out for that this year.

i've been off for a while - but am back now - hopefully for a bit anyway - just had to reply to this 1

the chances are that you won't get sweet chestnuts of any value (size or taste) this year - because of the up and down weather. they have started to fall off of the trees prematurely - they have not reached even half their usual size - if the wet, windy and cold weather continues - you won't get much of a harvest at all.

and for the record - sweet chestnuts were ground to make flour for centuries - and it really is very good - especially for those gluten free freaks.

ooh -- i am glad to be back...

Our local county museum Holds a Victorian Chistmas Display every year. All the staff dress up in victorian garb.
There is the old fire range and hot buttered toast, all kinds of old festive decorations,The old candle lit parlour and the games that where around then. But best of all for me is the Hot Chestnut Man.He stands next to his open brassier filled with red hot coal or coke and dishes out piping hot fresh cooked chestnuts. A fantastic treat.

Shaun, Munty,WG,And RR.
Thats BRASSIER ok

 I took a double take of that sentence - Imagine a bloke on an open bra - ssier burning red hot coke   Does he do the coke openly, lol? P Doherty (*rock star* with famous supermodel ex gal) better not stumble across this thread, else you'll be swamped with PMs

Seriously though, coke?
