Blueberries in a bath!
« on: October 17, 2011, 20:36 »
Hi everyone,

I have just taken over an allotment this summer so am only just really getting started.

I was listening to gardeners question time and they suggested growing bluberries in an old bath tub. When I got to my new allotment what should I find?? Yes, you guessed it! A bathtub!

Has anyone ever tried this before?
I know I will need plenty of acid compost but I think I can fit three plants in, will that be one too many?

Please give me the benefit of all your wisdom!!

Quantity of plants depends on the variety, as some are short, squatty growers, others can be quite tall and wide.

If choosing short squatty plants, 3 would do, but tall ones should be limited to 2, one at either end.

I'd also recommend laying some gravel on the bottom, maybe an inch, just for some drainage. Blueberries like it  damp, not swampy, which a solid tub could do.

Thanks Trillium,

I am collecting all the stones I take out of the beds and making two small children put them in the bottom of the bath (cant beat slave labour!)

Will look out for short stumpy varieties.

The variety Top Hat is short and easy to track down  :)

I plan on doing the same thing, with an early, mid and late variety arranged along the bath. Something like this: http://bit.ly/o3XKz7

Though the area my fruit cage is going to live is still not ready due to a bee's nest. This means every time I see a bath down the tip I really have to restrain myself...
