No just a bit of oil as a safeguard.  :)

That does look straight forward argyllie. No waiting about for the dough to rise!!  :)

Brilliant - thanks.

That looks gorgeous.

Not that it matters but out of interest, does it have a bread like texture?   :)

I thought it was going to be more like a scone type texture, but with alll the ham and cheese through it, you don't really notice. :)

Did it need much flour on the work surface in order to shape it before putting it on the baking sheet?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

No, it basically came together in the bowl - its quite a dry mix - and the basic ball shape was formed before it went onto the baking sheet.

Excellent.

Guess what I'm chopping up right now, yes, 100g ham!

Just got the cheese to grate.

Might try reducing the fan oven cooking temp by a few degrees and see how that works out.

Well, try as I might, I couldn't get it to stay together in the bowl so added about 20ml (?)more water.  The mixture was very compressed in order to get it to stick together, but it doesn't half smell good  :D

30 minutes or so to go till its ready.

I added extra water to get it to come together, then found it too sticky so I added a bit more flour just to handle it. It did stay in the shape pictured though. I just set it on a bit of parchment paper which I'll re-use a few times. Made it easier to slide off the baking sheet and onto the cooling rack. And no extra fats.

Don't think I did it quite right.  I cooked it for over 45 mins at about 180C (fan) and only the outside was properly cooked.  There wasn't any air in it either so it hadn't risen at all.

I did have to squeeze it quite hard to get it into the ball shape; the slits didn't open up either.  The flour and baking powder were a little old, perhaps that contributed too.

It does taste quite nice, don't get me wrong, but I hate this oven.  I can't turn the fan off, things burn near the door and are less cooked near the rear (I think it's that way round), and I cannot get anything like cakes etc to cook inside as well as on the outside.  Grr.

Yorkie re.your oven.

do you know if it has 2 elements, if it does check they are both working or that you have it so that both are on if you haven't checked that already that is :)

Thanks for the suggestions spana and apologies to others for the thread hijack  ::)

I've no idea if there are 2 elements.  The oven is 8 or so years old and I think the manufacturer (a name I didn't recognise) is now out of business.  No idea of the model and no instruction booklet.

The settings switch has: fan (no heat), fan (heat), grill (no fan), grill (fan) and another setting which isn't no fan (heat)!

I think it's probably user error to some degree because my friend always turned out perfect cakes  :(
