transplanting asparagus
« on: October 15, 2011, 13:38 »
I have decided to move my 4 year ols aspargus to a raised bed, I have read up on some old threads and the only thing I am not sure about is if it is too early to move them yet or should I wait a bit longer?
I have never been lost...................
But I will admit to being confused for several weeks

And when you do dig it up, be sure to take a good rootball of soil with it. It doesn't mind loosing a few outer roots but hates much disturbance close to the crown.

Suppliers grow them in sand which is why they can easily pull up  the entire root system. The rest of us must deal with sticky soils.

I transplanted several asparagus root balls from pots into old builders sand bags....I hadn`t realised they took so much to fill !!!!
I used well rotted compost, old compost from the previous years toms/pepper/aub pots etc. Half a bag of sharp sand and soil from my back garden and a few bags of fresh bagged compost.

In the end I rolled the sides of the bags down a bit I confess !
But this year, the plants rocketted away ,really thick spears, healthy looking all year and next year I get to pick for eating!

A lot of hard work from seed, but it`ll be well worth the wait!

Asparagus will live in almost any soil, but if you can add some sharp sand, they'll really like that. They also prefer soil a bit to the alkaline side, so a bit of liming is good.
