Stopping Slugs In greenhouse
« on: October 13, 2011, 18:42 »
Right, I have a lean to poly carbonate greenhouse that has been sealed to the wall with silicone sealant. There are no gaps larger than half a mm between the base and the flagged floor. I have sewed some radish in a small tub, sprinkled coffee granules and soot over the soil, put organic slug pellets (as advised here before my last thread on this topic was shut down) and STILL I find inside a few days later a giant orange slug nibbling the tops off my radish (no change there).

How did it get in, how did it get onto the soil and why didn't the pellets kill it ?

Two things -- slugs travel through soil not just overground, so that's how it got in
and those big orangeones take some killing and can recover from a dose of pellets to get up and go again, unless you collect them when stunned

Go out tonight... with a torch...  a jar to collect him in and tomorrow take to some area that he will not do any damage (I go to the downs or the woods)... OR if you are inclined...  douse him with lots of salt... cruel, but I think only the same as pellets...

I think you're fighting a war you can't win! Sometimes you've got to accept the inevitable, slugs, mice, aphids and everything else that wants to munch on your crops will, in the end, defeat all you throw at them. Give them a little, and enjoy what's left for you. :)

Surely it's not impossible to stop them getting in a greenhouse at least. I can't believe those giant orange ones come up through soil.

They WILLtravel in through the soil as you have been previously informed.  They also get in there on the underside of pots or trays that havn't been scrupulously cleaned.  Do you go out in the night and catch them in the act as has been suggested several times by several different people?

I have a lean to greenhouse on a concrete base and for a long time puzzeled over how slugs of the large orange and green variety seemed to come and go as they pleased.  What  i had not taken into account was the drain that takes the down pipe from the roof and runs into an open drain within the greenhouse. after a good dose of slug repelent around the edge i have not seen another slug. Cant say i like the thought of slugs out of the drains slideing over my lovely fresh salad crops. :tongue2:

I put my chickens feeder in an outside storage bin overnight and each morning I kept finding the big orange slugs eating the food.  Since then I have made sure that the inside of the bin has a generous dusting of diatomaceous earth.  It could be coincidence but I haven't seen any slugs or slime trails since!
