Never save any bean seeds if any of your plants show any sign of anthracnose - It's carried by the seed.

What's that  :?:

I think it is munty.  We used to have it on the lottie we had 20 years ago.

The pods get brown sunken patches on them, have you not come across it ?

Have a look in Hessayon, in the pea and bean troubles section.

So what's the bottom line?
Try and save some seeds from my runners or order new seedling plants from Dobies?

Must say - the runners have probably been the biggest hit in my garden this year.
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

My plan is to buy a packet, and if any of the saved seed takes.......BONUS!

By planting the saved seed first, it won't be too late to buy more seed if it's unsuccesful.

It's very good that we got Aunty's wisdom here and as we have been talking a lot of saving seeds around diff threads never mentioning the very important thing: only ever save seed from HEALTHY GOOD PLANTS.

I hope people would have applied a bit of common sense there!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So we all do hope, but if we go on about it a lot, might as well hint on this.

once you have separated your beanst'e worth putting them in a plastic bag in the deep freeze for 24 hours to kill off any weevils or weevil eggs . Then store in an airtight jar in a cool place ....a cool fridge is even better.

"beans are legumes, the roots are full of nitrogen. "

As I cut down my spent broad beans I was wondering if this is actually true.

Yes, I know about root nodules fixing nitrogen, but the plants are now dying.  Is there still a useful amount of nitrogen in the nodules or have they given their all and now given up for the year?

Has anyone got any evidence that the practice of leaving the roots in is actually beneficial rather than pulling the plants and putting the whole lot on the compost heap?

Cheers,

Gillie
