Westwood tiller identification
« on: October 12, 2011, 09:59 »
I have a Westwood tiller but there are no plates on it to identify the engine (briggs and Stratten - but which model. Must be 30 years old. No markings on the engine either that I can see. It has been idle for a lot of years whilst i was in the Miiddle East and now it needs some TLC to get it back to operational mode.

First I need o identify the Westwood model and also the engine model. Then some spares - if still available.

I'm not familiar with Westwood model names/numbers...but with regard the engine numbers they should be stamped into the engine blower housing (cowling with the starter rope on it). They are often on the flat section  that faces the carburettor. Model-Type-Code.

The Code will give you the date of the engine manufacture, reading year/month/day/factory.

The only time they may be missing genuinely is if the cowling has been replaced with a new one in which case a sticker was supplied to transfer the old number to and often the cowling will then just be in grey primer.

The set of numbers are the key to everything regarding parts drawings, manuals and spares.  A cowling swop in some unknown past history would be the only other time that there would be a problem with identification. I hope you can find the numbers they can be a bit hard to see under grime and perhaps a bit of rusting.

To find the model, you will need to find out what HP rating the engine is

If it has a 3hp engine, then it will be a Groundhog G99, or if later, a G3

The 4HP model was a G4, and the 5HP model, the G5

Hope this is of some help
