carrot root fly
« on: October 09, 2011, 18:13 »
I have a unusual problem. I have suffered on the plot this year with carrot root fly. In previous years I have used enviromesh to keep them at bay. But this year being in a national trust walled garden they did not want to put up the white sheet and have the whole garden look like a campsite of tents.

Also being organic they do not want me to use any pesticides.

If there are any other organic methods then please help

Many thanks in advance Alex

why not ask them, the National Trust people, how they suggest you manage to grow carrots without environmesh

You could try beige net curtaining, which does not show up so much

They never use it and never have any problems. Their carrots are not far from mine so I can't understand why mine are affected and theirs are not

How good are the fly resistant varieties?  Anyone know?

That's why you need to ask them how they do it, if they've perfected a method

Then you can let us all know how to do it  :D
