Comfrey
« on: October 08, 2011, 16:49 »
I have been told that it is not a good idea to use comfrey on chalky soils, as it is alkline.
Anybody else heard this? I feel a bit dissapointed as I  have been making lots of comfrey tea and using it on my chalky soil.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

if you have already been using it, what were the results?  If you have had failures then perhaps there is something in what you have been told, but if not, then I'd say carry on.  Personally I can't see the problem - comfrey tea is likely to be slightly acidic but if you dig in manure, this too would have the same effect.  Maybe someone doesn't like the smell of the tea when its brewing and wants you to stop ....

Everything seems to be growing ok. I was just wondering about the long term effect. I do use a lot of leaf mould as well, which is acid and perhaps creating a balance. I suppose I could add a soil testing kit to my Christmas list. :)
