I am sure I have read somewhere(but cant remember where!) that you can plant mange tout at this time of year and overwinter them in the ground.
Is this correct or have I spent toooo long talking to the plants.

You can sow seeds oct/november for overwintering but sugar snap/mangetout are summer sowing types.Feltham first are the only types I`ve tried but any round seed type will do.Good slug protection is needed though.

It might be the slugs and other things, they always were more hassle and disappointment then any  use for me. The autumn sown peas, I mean, no sugar snaps.

tried over winter peas under viromesh last year - will not be repeating this experiment - complete waste of time.

broad beans - now that's another matter - well worth growing over winter with protection.  they end up looking very ropey early in the new year especially once you remove the protection, but just when you're on the verge of digging 'em up as a bad lot they recover and produce a great crop.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
